RICHARDS Albert "Snobby"Robert  UPDATED

Albert Robert Richards, affectionately known as "Snobby" or "Bob," was a prominent figure in Gnowangerup, remembered for his many skills and contributions to the community.
Born on 10th May, 1905, he was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Richards and the grandson of Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Richards, early pioneers of the district who established "Christmas Farm." Bob’s life spanned nearly nine decades, with his passing on 16th August August, at the age of 89.

Bob Richards arrived in the Gnowangerup area during the 1920s, where he initially worked as a teamster and general handyman on local farms. He also began his journey as a learner shearer. He first started a bootmaher and shoe repair business in Gnowangerup in a small shop on the site where IGA is in Yougenup Street.

A self-taught individual, he developed skills as a wireless repairer and later returned to his trade as a bootmaker and leather worker in the 1930s. This extended to repairing saddles and harnesses.

During World War II, Bob served in the Army, and upon his return, he reopened a boot repair shop. Snobby later moved his business to a small workshop conveniently located opposite the school entrance. He built a house next door and in 1956, he married Joyce Taylor, who worked at the Wilkinsons Economic Stores.

He continued to operate his shop until he retired. Snobby was known to be able to ‘fix anything’. Though his business was modest, it made a significant impact on the community.

Bob was also an accomplished athlete. He played football in his younger days and represented his club in several Great Southern Carnivals.

Additionally, he was an avid golfer, winning the championship at Gnowangerup Golf Club and notably shooting his age at the remarkable age of 80.

Gloria Vermaes: I think my brother Les wanted to apprentice with him for electronics, but sadly Mr Richards couldn't afford to take him on.

Diane Hunter: He was great could fix anything Loved his fantastic little shop.

His funeral service held at the Uniting Church in Gnowangerup on 19th August, 1994, drew a large crowd of friends, family, and community members who came to pay their respects and support those mourning his loss.
Richards’ shop was more than just a place for repairs; it was a hub of memories for many locals. People fondly recalled the distinct smell of leather upon entering, and many benefitted from his skills.
